The purpose of the cap is to prevent rain water from entering the chimney over the course of time causing the chimney to deteriorate. Chase
TOPS

Leaking and damaged chase tops are potential hazards on prefabricated (metal) fireplaces. Town & Country Chimney Service, Inc. can help eliminate these problems before they start by replacing a rusted water damaged chase top, with a brand new stainless steel custom made chase top to fit your chimney exactly.
 

Lock Top
DAMPERS

They’re not just “replacement dampers” anymore…no way. All throat dampers leak energy, even new ones. So each and every fireplace is a candidate for the win/win of an energy-saving damper installation. Lock-Top has a stainless steel lid attached to a cast-aluminum frame by an array of stainless spring wires. It comes with a 30′ cable that drops down the chimney and is operated with a handle mounted in the firebox. Just a tug on the handle opens or tightly closes the Lock-Top. Longer cables are available. The Lock-Top comes with a safety device that locks the damper open during a chimney fire.
